Emerson College Celebrates Grand Opening of Paramount Center

Mar 19, 2010

Mayor Thomas Menino joined Emerson College and the BRA to celebrate the grand opening of the Paramount Center. The project has restored one of the city’s most beloved theatres while also creating a truly mixed-use project that will enliven lower Washington Street with the infusion of 260 students. In addition to the fully restored 550-seat theatre, the center offers a restaurant, a scene shop, classrooms, faculty offices, practice rooms, rehearsal rooms, a sound stage, a black box theatre with seating for 140 people, a film screening room for approximately 180 people and four levels of dormitory housing for 260 students.

Since taking office, Mayor Menino has made historic preservation of theatre space a top priority of his administration. In 1995, Mayor Menino listed the Paramount, the Modern and the Opera House on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's “11 Most Endangered List” to raise public interest and awareness about the need for preserving these theaters. Since then, the Opera House re-opened in 2004 after a $35million renovation and the Modern Theatre is currently under construction thanks to Suffolk University.
