Friends of the Charlestown Navy Yard to Receive $5,000 in Mitigation Funds for Summer Events

Jun 23, 2010

The Board granted approval for the disbursement of $5,000 in mitigation funds to the Friends of the Charlestown Navy Yard (FCNY) for summer programming in the Navy Yard. The funds are part of a community benefits fund associated with the Carlyle Group’s purchase of Building 42 within the Navy Yard.

The programming supports the BRA’s Waterfront Activation Network Plan for the Charlestown Navy Yard (CNY), which is designed to activate and attract residents and visitors to the CNY waterfront with a network of special destinations and public events. A significant element of the plan is programming events at locations along the waterfront. While the long-term plan will include establishing a trust with permanent funding, the BRA has collected $50,000 in funds committed by the Carlyle Group. To date, the BRA has reimbursed community organizations approximately $34,000 to fund over a dozen summer programs attracting, on average, 200 to 300 people each.

Building on their successes of past years, FCNY has developed a list of activities to attract people to the waterfront based upon a $5,000 budget. Some examples include:

1. Summer Solstice Party in June: A children oriented event, co-sponsored with the Charlestown Working Theater, to include a storyteller, a clown, and ice cream in Shipyard Park. This event has been extremely successful in past years.

2. Two concerts in Shipyard Park.

3. A “Fit-a-thon” which is a night in Shipyard Park with obstacle course and other exercise opportunities for adults and children, with Mass. General Hospital providing information on the dangers of childhood obesity and preventative health measures.

4. An event with Courageous Sailing Center to provide free sailing to community children.

As the budget permits, the FCNY will plan and organize other events designed to activate the Charlestown Waterfront. This summer’s programming plan has wide support within the Charlestown community and many community members have volunteered to coordinate the events.
