Whittier Street Health Center to Get New Facility in Roxbury

Jul 22, 2010

The BRA Board approved a new 78,900 square-foot facility for the Whittier Street Health Center in Roxbury, which will greatly expand health care services to the community. The new facility, to be located across the street from their existing facility, includes the construction of a single six-story building on a sub-divided parcel of land within Parcel P3 along Tremont Street. The new facility will house a variety of medical and dental offices, a pharmacy, a physical therapy clinic, and community space. The project also includes 5,000 square feet of space which will house a mammography clinic, cancer screening and exam rooms in collaboration with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Additionally, Whittier will now have a dedicated drop-off zone for patients and visitors.

Today, the Health Center serves 14,500 patients per year representing 20 different countries; 17 languages are spoken by staff at the health center. The Health Center currently employs approximately 175 people in their 1125 Tremont Street location. It is anticipated the new facility will create 50 new positions. As part of its commitments with the United States Health and Human Services HRSA grant that Whittier received, the Health Center will set aside 33 of these jobs for low-income area residents.

Whittier has committed to creating a “healthy” building and environment with its new facility. To that end, they are working with a team of green engineers and architects to achieve at least LEED Silver certification for the project. The design incorporates many energy-efficient, water conservation and air quality features into the building and site.

The development team includes the Whittier Street Health Center Committee, Inc. as the owner/developer; Donoghue Barrett & Singal, P.C. as the legal counsel; Domenech Hicks & Krockmalnic as the project architect; Weston & Sampson as the geotechnical & environmental engineer; McMahon Associates as the traffic engineer; STV Incorporated as the civil engineer and land surveyor; R.D. Kimball as the mechanical and plumbing engineer; Lightship Engineering, LLC as the environmental engineer; Weidlinger Associates as the structural engineer; GLC Development Resources, LLC as the development consultant; and KV Associates, Inc. as the building consultants.

The $32 million project will generate approximately 450 full-time construction jobs. It is anticipated that construction will commence by the fourth quarter of 2010. The entire construction schedule is anticipated to be approximately 16 months with completion scheduled by January of 2012.
