BRA Partners with Design Museum Boston to Launch "Creative Capital"
Oct 27, 2010
The BRA, in partnership with the Design Museum Boston, is pleased to announce the opening of
Creative Capital:
Designed
in Boston
,
the inaugural exhibit of the newly formed
Design Museum Boston
.
The exhibit opens at Boston’s City Hall on October 28, 2010. Running for twelve months, Creative Capital celebrates the contributions of some of Boston’s best designers.
A newcomer to New England’s cultural landscape,
Design Museum Boston
is the region’s first museum dedicated solely to design. Embodying both a dedication to revolutionary design and a willingness to break with tradition, the Museum has no permanent address. Rather,
Design Museum Boston
creates a decentralized network of design exhibits in galleries, retail environments, public spaces, and on the web.
Why design? Design has the power to make everyday lives more comfortable, more efficient, more exciting, and more rewarding. Notice the public park where you eat lunch? The lobby you pass through on your way to work? The kitchen tools you use every day? Great design at your service, created in Boston.
Exhibited works represent a broad cross-section of Boston’s top design industries. Highlighted projects include Hill Holiday’s Visit the Pin advertising campaign for the City of Boston; Office dA and Pappas Enterprises’ Macallen Building in South Boston; local fashion designer Maya Luz; Carol R Johnson and Associates’ Fresh Pond Reservation in Cambridge; Leers Weinzapfel Associates’ Gateway Complex for UPenn; Korn Design’s rebranding program for the Boston Ballet; (ELEVEN)’s barware line for Oxo; CBT Architects’ inspired renovation of the One Post Office Square Lobby; and Proverb’s exhibit “Choosing to Participate” for Facing History and Ourselves.
City Hall is an ideal venue for Creative Capital, as it fosters the Museum’s commitment to bring design-related programming to Boston’s public spaces. The exhibit also celebrates Mayor Menino’s vision to design an Innovation District in Boston. The intent for the Innovation District is to foster creative, bold thinking and to produce creative sector jobs in the 21st century.
“Boston has always valued the design community and its impact on the urban fabric of our city,” says Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “Design shapes what we produce and done right, it can foster the success not just of businesses, but of whole cities and regions.”
Creative Capital: Designed in Boston also opens in partnership with VDA Productions and AIR Graphics. Design Museum Boston would also like to thank its generous sponsors for making the exhibition possible, including DIGMA (Design Industry Group of Massachusetts); Continuum; Boston Graphic Artists Guild; IDSA Boston; ELEVEN; Clio; Essential; Sprout Studios and Harpoon Brewery. For more information about Design Museum Boston, please visit www.designmuseumboston.org.
The exhibition is free and open to the public, and can be viewed on the 9th floor of Boston City Hall beginning October 28, weekdays between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.

About
Boston’s Innovation District
The planned Innovation District, 1,000 acres of residential, commercial, and industrial space along the South Boston Waterfront, is intended to ensure Boston’s continued leadership in the innovation economy—both as an engine for job growth and the development of innovative products and services. To realize his vision for the Innovation District, Mayor Menino developed a three-part strategy centered upon densely clustering companies; providing new models of housing, including those that meet the needs of entrepreneurs; and providing public infrastructure and networking opportunities to foster creativity and bold thinking.
