BRA Develops Triple Bottom Line Calculator

Feb 22, 2011

The BRA Research Division has developed the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) Calculator for assessing the economic, environmental, and social impact of strategic capital investments in municipalities for the Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN) led by the Energy and Environmental Services Department at the City of Boston. This work is an extension of prior work done by the BRA Research Division to evaluate the impact of the city’s ARRA portfolio. The purpose of the model is to understand the impact of capital projects focused specifically on investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy, transportation, and mixed-use development.  The model converts economic, environmental, and social benefits of capital projects into monetized values in order to evaluate the cost-benefit of potential investments and to guide policy decisions. Currently, the USDN member cities are testing the TBL Calculator and will make it available to the public at a later date.
