Announcing the 2011 Greenway Food Vendors

The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy is expanding last year’s popular food vending program on the Greenway, and today announced the names and locations of the finalists and the food they will be serving. The expansion is based on the success of 2010’s successful pilot program. This year, 12 food vendors will be operating in eight locations along the Greenway, as compared to six vendors/five locations in the previous year. The 2011 roster includes four food trucks, one trailer, one mobile kiosk, one bike, and five carts. In 2010, the only food truck was Clover Food Lab, which quickly became a sensation. The Conservancy’s goal is to have 10-15 food vendors on the Greenway every season. “There is really something for everyone when we talk about food vending on the Greenway,” says Nancy Brennan, executive director of the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy. “Lots of affordable, delicious options, in various locations around the Parks: BBQ, Indian street food, cupcakes, grilled cheese, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, smoothies. Great food, sunshine, fountains, WiFi, and free public events – there’s a lot of fun to be had on the Greenway!” The 12 vendors who were selected for the 2011 were chosen based on the distinctiveness of their offerings, the quality of their product, and their prices. From South to North they include: BBQ Smithnew! – Food Truck – Chinatown Park (near Beach Street and Surface Road) – Healthy, flavorful American BBQ for people on the go, from a husband and wife team who met in culinary school. Clover Food Lab – Food Truck – Dewey Square Park (across from South Station) – This popular food truck, which recycles cooking oil to help power the truck, offers a wide variety of local, seasonal, and delicious vegetarian food. Clover has been named one of the 10 best lunch trucks in the U.S. by the Wall Street Journal. DosaMobilenew! – Food Truck – Dewey Square Park (across from South Station) – The fun, fresh, and lighter side of Indian “street food” will be served from an eco-friendly truck (solar panels, compostable containers), by the owner of eight local restaurants. Lefty’s Silver Cartnew! – Trailer – Dewey Square Park (between Congress Street and Atlantic Avenue) – Named for its two left-handed owners, Lefty’s will offer sandwiches and soups with ingredients from local farms and bicycled-powered smoothies. They will also loan out red-checkered picnic blankets, to complete the outdoor dining experience. Equal Exchange Free Range Cafenew! – Roaming Bike Cart (State Street to Pearl Street) – Will sell organic, locally roasted Fair Trade coffee. Silk Road BBQ – Mobile Kiosk – Rowes Wharf Plaza (High Street and Atlantic Avenue) – Charcoal- grilled global fusion BBQ, salads, and free hot tea. Silk Road BBQ will be appearing soon on the TV Food Network. Grilled Cheese Nation new! – Food Truck – across from the Rings Fountain (Milk Street and Atlantic Avenue) – Will sell items like grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup, and salads, using produce from local farms and suppliers. Cupcake Cartnew! – Food Cart – Rings Fountain (Milk Street and Atlantic Avenue) – Cupcakes baked and sold by a Greenway neighbor and restaurateur. Beantown Franks ‘n Spuds Food Cart – Rings Fountain (Milk Street and Atlantic Avenue) – Enjoy summer favorites such as locally-sourced hot dogs, sausages, and roasted rosemary potatoes from this solar-powered cart. Going Bananas – Food Cart – at the Carousel (across from Quincy Market) – Going Bananas provides fresh fruit smoothies, Italian ice, and bottled drinks. Streaterynew! – Food Cart – at the Carousel (across from Quincy Market) – Global street food including sausages, Greek Souvlaki, and weekly specials. Boston Pushcart – Food Cart – North End Parks/Freedom Trail (Hanover Street and Surface Road) – Community favorite Joe Bono, owner of North End restaurants Al Dente and Benevento’s, will offer a classic pushcart menu including Italian sausages, Italian ices, and lemonade. 32 proprietors submitted proposals to participate in the food vending program. Clover Food Lab and Silk Road BBQ are currently open for business on the Greenway. The ten other food vendors are expected to begin operations by Memorial Day Weekend. The Greenway parks are fully accessible to people with disabilities. The Wharf District Parks in the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway are accessible through the MBTA Aquarium (Blue Line) Station, and in close proximity to both North Station (Green, Orange and Commuter Rail Lines) and South Station (Red, Silver and Commuter Rail Lines).
