Comcast Invests in Innovation District with Expanded Delivery of Advanced Fiber Network

Oct 27, 2011

Comcast announced that the expansion of its advanced fiber network into Boston’s Innovation District is underway as the result of months of planning between the company, the Mayor’s Office, and the Boston Redevelopment Authority. “Increasing the availability of competitive, affordable broadband services across the Innovation District is a crucial objective,” Mayor Menino said.  “We are witnessing tremendous growth in the district and broadband is a critical element to the creative business models that are being developed.  We appreciate Comcast’s responding to our call for more and better service in the area.” The expansion will increase the choices for broadband and telecommunications services for business customers in the Innovation District.  Now, pending permission from property owners to allow Comcast access to their buildings, dozens of Innovation District businesses from Fort Point Channel to the Marine Industrial Park will have access to Comcast’s full suite of Business Class offerings. “Comcast is thrilled to be a part of this exciting and rapidly growing part of the City of Boston,” said Steve Hackley, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Greater Boston Region.  “When we met with Mayor Menino to discuss extending broadband to the area, we saw his vision and his passion for this new, vibrant business and residential neighborhood and got to work. We look forward to being an integral part of the success of the Innovation District now and into the future.” Comcast already provides broadband services to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Fan Pier, the World Trade Center, the Seaport Hotel, and the restaurants at Liberty Wharf, among other businesses and residential buildings. Comcast’s continued investments allow the company to offer Comcast Business Class Internet Deluxe 100 to even more Innovation District businesses. Deluxe 100 features download speeds of up to 100 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 10 Mbps, allowing customers to operate their businesses more efficiently. The 100 Mbps download speed is 60 times faster than a standard T1 line. For example, using the 100 Mbps service, a business customer could download a large 2 GB file in about 2 ½ minutes.  To download the same sized file on a typical 1.5 Mbps T1 line would take almost three hours. Comcast Business Class was named the fastest business Internet provider in the nation according to a PCMag.com reader test of the nation’s leading ISPs. The results were taken from more than 58,000 tests completed on www.speedtest.net. According to the test, Comcast Business Class averaged download speeds of 24.13 Mbps, 39 percent better than its closest competitor. Comcast also offers Metro Ethernet services for large businesses, delivered using the Company’s industry leading fiber-based IP network. Unlike competitive carriers that simply resell the phone company’s network, Comcast is giving customers a true alternative network to maximize the performance and reliability of their business communications and applications.  Comcast delivers bandwidth from 1 Mbps up to 10 Gbps that can be remotely scaled in increments of 1 Mbps, 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps, and offered with three different classes of service.
