Mayor Menino Celebrates Groundbreaking at 800 Huntington Ave for New Mass Eye and Ear Facility

Oct 27, 2011

Total project cost: $75 million Total square footage: 90,000 sq ft Number of jobs: 125 construction jobs, 70 permanent jobs Today Mayor Thomas M. Menino joined members of the The Beal Companies and Mass Eye and Ear to celebrate the groundbreaking of 800 Huntington Avenue at the crossroads of Mission Hill and the Longwood Medical Area.  The new development will be operated by Mass Eye and Ear and house outpatient clinics and surgical facilities. “Mass Eye and Ear’s $75 million facility will create another 125 construction jobs, and 70 permanent jobs in this key industry,” said Mayor Thomas M. Menino.  “Boston’s hospitals and medical institutions are the backbone of our economy, and I am excited they are thriving and expanding in our city.” The Beal Companies owns 800 Huntington Avenue and will be developing the site.  The existing two-story building will be renovated and redeveloped into a three story, 90,000 square foot complex with a glass façade that will improve the pedestrian experience along Huntington Avenue.  The new building will be situated at a bend in the road and will be a prominent new addition to the view from Brigham Circle. In addition to Mass Eye and Ear’s planned medical uses, the project will have a ground floor optical shop, café, and approximately 150-garaged parking spaces.  The building is expected to open in October 2012. “This new facility will allow us to meet the growing demand for the specialized services we provide,” said John Fernandez, President and CEO of Mass. Eye and Ear. “The proximity to so many hospitals in the Longwood area and to our teaching and research partner Harvard Medical School will allow more opportunities for collaboration in patient care and clinical research initiatives.” “We are proud of our continuing role of working with Boston’s important medical institutions to expand access to their life changing services and programs into Boston’s neighborhoods,” said Robert L. Beal, President of The Beal Companies.  “This new facility will not only allow patients to receive care where they live but will bring jobs and economic activity to the area.” The project architect is Tsoi/Kobus & Associates and Suffolk Construction is the construction manager.
