Director Meade Celebrates Fan Pier Building A Topping Off

Sep 06, 2012

This week BRA Director Peter Meade celebrated another major construction milestone at Fan Pier on the South Boston Waterfront alongside Fallon Company President & CEO Joe Fallon, Vertex Pharmaceuticals Executive Vice President & CFO Ian Smith, more than 100 members of Iron Workers Union Local No. 7, and more than 200 construction workers. The Topping Off ceremony attendees signed the final beam for Fifty Northern Avenue before it was raised and placed to complete the tower's frame. The building is the second of two towers (Tower A) that will house Vertex Pharmaceuticals new global headquarters. The framework of the first Vertex building at Eleven Fan Pier Boulevard (Tower B) was completed in July 2012. The two 18-story buildings totaling 1.1 million square feet are slated for completion in late 2012. The development is the largest privately funded construction project in the nation. The two towers that will be leased by Vertex will be the second and third major structures at Fan Pier. The completed 21-acre Fan Pier development complex will contain eight buildings comprised of offices, residences, retail space and hotel rooms, as well as a park and marina. The project’s next development phase is scheduled to be a 15-story condominium building designed by CBT Architects with 130 units and slated for completion in late 2014/early 2015. Vertex Pharmaceuticals is relocating from Cambridge, MA, and the two new buildings at Fan Pier will house the company’s entire Massachusetts workforce. During the 2012 BIO International Convention held in Boston, Vertex announced a more than $1 million over three year commitment to support a range of activities aimed at enhancing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education at two South Boston public schools. The Vertex buildings at Fan Pier will also include a 3,000-square-foot learning laboratory that will allow local students and teachers to conduct scientific projects alongside Vertex scientists.
