Director Meade Addresses Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce

BRA Director Peter Meade addressed the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce highlighting Boston's transformation under Mayor Menino's leadership.
  • Boston's population is growing faster than San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Bostonians born outside of the United States and young people (20-34 years of age) are driving Boston's population growth and economic growth.
  • 27% of Bostonians were born outside of the United States.  They account for 52% of Boston's population growth since 2000.
  • 35% of Bostonians are between the ages of 20 and 34, a higher percentage than any other city in the United States.  They are Boston's ONEin3ers.
  • ONEin3ers account for 75% of Boston's population growth since 2000.
    • 1/3rd own their own home
    • 26% were born outside the United States
    • 32% speak a language other than English at home
    • 48% comprise Boston's workforce
    • 58% take public transportation, walk, or bike to work
    • 33% make up Hubway's annual members
  • 52% of Bostonians with bachelor's degree are ONEin3ers.
In just the last 20 years, Boston has added nearly 80 million SF of new development, representing 11% of Boston's total square footage.  We're continuing to make Boston a city to live, work, play, and visit.
