Ribbon Cutting at Jamaica Plain's 1st Energy Positive Home

Dec 20, 2013

Representatives of the BRA, the Department of Neighborhood Development, the Office of Environmental and Energy Services, GFC Development Inc., Utile Inc., and Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of Jamaica Plain's first energy positive homes. The two LEED platinum townhouses located at 64-66 Catherine Street each feature 1,416 square feet of living space with three bedrooms and 2 ½ bathrooms. The homes are constructed within a super-insulated building, and include energy-efficient appliances and fixtures, as well as solar photovoltaic and solar thermal panels for power and hot water respectively.

The homes were constructed as part of Mayor Menino's Energy Plus “E+” Green Building Program, a residential design and construction initiative to bring energy-efficient and energy-positive green housing to Boston's neighborhoods. E+ green developments produce more energy than they use on an annual basis, giving energy back to the grid and saving homeowners’ money. In August Mayor Menino celebrated Boston's First Energy Positive Homes, which opened in the Highland Park neighborhood of Roxbury.

The E+ program is sponsored by NSTAR Electric & Gas, National Grid, U.S. Green Building Council, USGBC Massachusetts Chapter and the Boston Society of Architects.
