Boston E+ Green Building receives a 2015 COTE Award

Apr 30, 2015

Boston’s E+ Green Building at 226 Highland Street, Roxbury has been named a Top Ten Green Project by The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE)—a national distinction awarded annually to the top ten examples of sustainable architecture and ecological design that protect and enhance surrounding environments.

The Townhouses at 226-232 Highland Street were conceived as a replicable prototype for family friendly, deep green, energy efficient, urban homes. Each unit is approximately 1850-square-feet, with flexible living areas, 3 bedrooms, and 2.5 bathrooms. The project was the first completed under the City of Boston’s E+ (energy positive) Green Building Program, a pilot initiative to develop energy positive deep green housing. The project team, led by Urbanica Design and Interface Studio Architects, was chosen through a design competition organized by the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) and the Department of Neighborhood Development.

Boston is already a nationally recognized leader in green building, and this award serves as proof positive that the next generation of high performance deep green buildings is here. E+ Green Building Program projects, like the Highland Street Townhouses, are demonstrating, and proving, the feasibility of regenerative multi-unit residential buildings in Boston’s neighborhoods, along with their measurable benefits; The Highland Street project is USGBC Certified LEED for Homes Platinum. This designation and performance was reached through an integrated approach to project design and the incorporation of both passive and active energy efficiency measures.

The COTE Top Ten Awards program, now in its 19th year, is the profession's most rigorous recognition program for sustainable design excellence. The program celebrates projects that are the result of a thoroughly integrated approach to architecture, natural systems and technology. They make a positive contribution to their communities, improve comfort for building occupants and reduce environmental impacts through strategies such as reuse of existing structures, connection to transit systems, low-impact and regenerative site development, energy and water conservation, use of sustainable or renewable construction materials, and design that improves indoor air quality.

The projects will be honored at the upcoming AIA 2015 National Convention and Design Exposition in Atlanta on May 14-16. The Boston E+ Green Building program is an initiative of the Department of Neighborhood Development, Environment, Energy and Open Space and the Boston Redevelopment Authority.
