Cultural and civic space uses proposed for Pier 4 on the Boston Harbor

Pier 4 waterfront activation project proposal
The Boston Redevelopment Authority and building owner UDR Inc. recently received proposals to satisfy Pier 4’s public benefits requirement to activate the waterfront area through civic and cultural use.

Meeting the May 4, 2015 submission deadline were plans for performance venues, music studios, galleries and artist work spaces. Below is an overview of proposals for the 20,000 square feet of waterfront space in the 100 Pier 4 apartment tower in South Boston’s Seaport District.

Boston Cyberarts has proposed exhibition space for new media art, a performance/meeting area, technology incubation offices, and classrooms.

Celebrity Series of Boston presented plans for an indoor/outdoor performance venue with food and bar service. A separate space would be used as a “green room” for artists on performance nights or a lounge where artists and patrons could meet.

The Fort Point Arts Community hopes to use the space for portions of a 26,000-square-foot art lab, envisioned in 2012, that would include shared workspace, performance space, a gallery and its Made in Fort Point store.

The Steinway Society of Massachusetts has proposed a recital hall, music studios for lessons and practice, a 15-station, digital piano lab, and outdoor space for performances on a custom-built, solar-powered digital piano.

The Society of Arts and Crafts wants to relocate to Fan Pier and use the venue for exhibition space, a reference library and auditorium for lectures, workshops and performances.

The New York’s Artist Book Foundation, which creates and preserves books on artists’ lives and work, has asked to collaborate with the selected group to include a 1,000-square-foot gallery and bookstore.
