Community conversations about urban renewal continue

Aug 19, 2015

Thanks to everyone who attended our summer workshop series on urban renewal!

The BRA and its urban renewal team, led by planner and urban designer Corey Zehngebot, kicked off the workshops in Chinatown in early June and wrapped up with a final meeting in City Hall on July 22. The five-part series marked the second phase of a broader public engagement process to extend 14 of the city's 16 active urban renewal plan areas. Based on community feedback, the BRA will now refine the goals and planning objectives for each urban renewal area in order to present the findings and next steps for the extension process in the fall.

Throughout this process, the BRA has prioritized making information available to anyone who is interested, either through our website or through in-person conversations. As we move into the fall, the goal is to maintain this same approach for the next round of public engagement. For people who may have been unable to attend the workshop series, there’s still an opportunity to get up to speed and provide feedback. Materials from the community meetings and workshops can be found online – these include the original goals and planning objectives for each urban renewal plan area, reference maps, and handouts that were used to guide the workshop discussions.

Please share your feedback and comments with us by September 15. People are welcome to submit these online by visiting www.BostonUrbanRenewal.org. Make sure to check out the background information on urban renewal if you weren’t able to make one of our public meetings.

Also, stay tuned for more information about Boston’s first citywide plan in 50 years, Imagine Boston 2030. We have been coordinating internally to ensure that all the great ideas generated in the urban renewal workshops will directly inform the citywide planning effort.

Finally, the BRA is pleased to announce a partnership with the West End Museum on an urban renewal exhibition and event this fall. We will send out additional information in the coming weeks.
