Boston College and the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) are pleased to announce the opening of the second grant cycle for the Boston College Neighborhood Improvement Fund, a $2.5 million public benefit created by the college in collaboration with community members to enhance the public realm in Allston-Brighton.

Launched in 2015, the fund awarded $446,138 to six neighborhood organizations for projects last year. The awards supported a variety of initiatives, including four new Hubway bike share stations in Brighton, a memorial honoring a fallen World War II veteran from Brighton, improvements to local parks, and gateway signage for the Brighton Main Streets district.

It hasn’t yet been determine how many grants will be awarded in this cycle, but organizations are allowed to apply for up to $100,000 in funding. Detailed grant information and application guidelines are available here. Applications are due no later than August 10, 2016.

Eligible projects may include improvements to public parks and open space, neighborhood beautification, transportation and roadway improvements, public safety projects, and public art. Proposals should broadly benefit the Allston-Brighton community, with particular emphasis on the areas of Brighton closest to Boston College (e.g. Lake Street, Foster Street, Cleveland Circle, Commonwealth Avenue, and Brighton Center).

The Boston College Task Force, an oversight body comprised of community members that also serves as a review panel for the neighborhood grants, will hold an informational session about the fund on Tuesday, June 21 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Brighton Marine Health Center. The agenda for the meeting will also include a follow-up discussion about BC’s proposed recreation center project, which is currently being reviewed by the BRA.
