Boston Local Development Corporation (BLDC) closes loan for a new Charlestown Tea Bar

The
Boston Local Development Corporation
(BLDC) recently closed the financing for Boston’s second
Tea Bar by Evy
location. The company is owned and operated by Boston resident Evy Chen. The new Tea Bar by Evy will be located at 1 Monument Avenue in Charlestown’s Historic District. Evy hopes to open this new location in June. Tea Bar by Evy specializes in healthy and creative tea drinks on tap, including cold brew teas, sparkling teas, tea lattes and healthy bubble tea.
Young entrepreneur Evy Chen launched Evy Tea in 2014 when she saw something missing from the tea industry. Evy grew up in China in a family with ties to the tea industry. They had been in the business of tea for generations. Her great grandfather traded oolong in Fujian, one of the most popular tea growing regions in East Asia. She herself grew up in the province, and had an appreciation for the drink instilled in her from a young age. She saw an opportunity to take this centuries-old product and reinvent it by blending the old with the new.
By cold brewing her tea, she was able to remove any bitterness and create a smoother, more naturally sweet cold beverage that didn’t need all the sugar that is poured into typical iced tea drinks. She also felt that tea could be a far more versatile beverage. Driven by a passion for ingenuity and experimentation; Evy and her team began to play with the flavors of tea, fruit, herbs, and spices to create new flavor combinations that were refreshing and unique. This results in a cold drink with interesting flavors that appeals to the senses, makes you feel good, and is good for you.
Tea Bar by Evy’s first location in Jamaica Plain houses their brewing facility, R&D lab, and the first Tea Bar. Since opening Evy Tea, Evy has been named one of the “25 under 25” and “30 under 30” by the Boston Globe and Zagat. Her tea was also the 1st place winner at the 2013 North American Tea Championship. The Tea Bar is scored 4.8/5 stars on Yelp and 5/5 stars on TripAdvisor. Evy’s teas are sold in over 300 locations on the East Coast. This includes 33 Whole Foods Markets and numerous corporate offices and co-working spaces. The company also has partnerships with Wolfgang Puck, Bon Me, Clover, and CVS Health.
