Boston achieves 2017 Platinum Certification from World Council on City Data

Feb 23, 2018

For the fourth year in a row, the City of Boston has received Platinum Certification for city data from the World Council on City Data (WCCD).

The city’s Platinum Certification was based on the recommendation by the International Organization for Standardization verifiers who reviewed the City’s submission. Data on 100 indicators were prepared by the Boston Planning & Development Agency’s (BPDA) Research Division and required extensive coordination with 27 other federal, state and local agencies.

“It is only through the commitment and leadership of cities like Boston that we can continue building a global network of sustainable, smart and prosperous cities,” commented WCCD President and CEO Dr. Patricia McCarney in Boston’s certification letter.

In 2014, Boston became the first U.S. city to join the WCCD, making it a member of a select group of global cities that includes Amman, Barcelona, Bogota, Buenos Aires, Dubai, Guadalajara, Haiphong, Helsinki, Johannesburg, London, Makati, Makkah, Melbourne, Minna, Rotterdam, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, and Toronto.

Upon joining the WCCD, Alvaro Lima, Director of Research at the BPDA, represented Boston at a WCCD summit in London, an opportunity for local leaders from around the world to spark a global conversation in the new universal language of cities: data.

The Research Division of the BPDA leads and manages Boston’s participation in the WCCD.
