Boston, a national leader in green building, is promoting the next generation of high performance deep green buildings. The City's E+ Green Building Program is demonstrating, and proving, the feasibility of regenerative multi-unit residential buildings and bringing energy and environmentally positive homes to Boston’s neighborhoods.

In September 2011, the BPDA announced the selection of development teams for the first round of E+ Green Building sites. Together, the three selected teams have completed ten units of energy positive (E+) LEED Platinum housing including two deed restricted affordable units. Through their efforts we have proven the feasibility and piloted the practices for the next generation of urban housing in Boston's Highland Park and Jamaica Plain neighborhoods. For more information, see the News & Updates.

In 2012, the City expanded the program with the addition of two new development sites in the Mission Hill and Highland Park neighborhoods and held a community symposium—"Envisioning E+ Green Communities"—to launch planning for the two sites. Following community charrettes and planning work in each neighborhood, the City issued Request for Proposals for the two sites. In March of 2015, a team led by Sebastian Mariscal Studio, Inc. was selected to redevelop the Mission Hill site. In November 2018, three individual development teams were selected for the Highland Park sites including, Urbanica for Package One, The New Urban Collaborative for Package Two, and Rees/Larkin for Package Four.

In 2016, the City expanded the E+ Green Building Program to Dorchester. Working in partnership with the Talbot Norfolk Triangle community, a team led by GFC Development was selected for a new site on Colonial Avenue that will add four new E+ LEED Platinum housing units to the neighborhood, including one deed-restricted affordable unit.

The E+ Program is an initiative of the Boston Environment Department, the Department of Neighborhood Development, and the Boston Planning & Development Agency.
