On Friday, September 23, Mayor Menino and BRA Director Peter Meade joined AvalonBay representatives at a groundbreaking for a new 28-story luxury residential tower in the Back Bay. Avalon Exeter at 88 Exeter Street is a $100 million investment in the city that will generate $725,000 in new taxes and create 300 new construction jobs and 15 permanent jobs.  The building will have 187 rental units, consisting of studios, one, two, and three bedrooms. The Avalon Exeter development will improve pedestrian connections across the Back Bay, removing “the wall” effect that exists on Exeter Street now with the installation of a grand staircase and indoor elevator that will move pedestrians from Exeter Street up to the Prudential Center plaza. The additions will activate the street and improve pedestrian circulation with better connectivity among the Prudential Center buildings and around the Copley Square area, including the Boston Public Library, the Copley Square T stop, Copley Place, and the shops at the Prudential Center. AvalonBay’s new Avalon Exeter building will cap off the residential component of the Prudential Center development plan that was set forth in 1990 after extensive planning with neighborhood representatives.
