BRA Collaborates with City of Boston for 2014 First Night New Year’s Eve Celebration

Nov 07, 2013

The City of Boston announced program highlights for Boston’s 2014 First Night New Year’s Eve Celebration at a press conference with Mayor Menino this week.  Boston’s First Night Celebration is the country’s oldest and largest New Year’s arts celebration.  “First Night has its roots in Boston and keeping this tradition alive is so important to our City,” said Mayor Menino. “It’s a day that welcomes children, families and visitors from all over the region to celebrate our community.” The Highland Foundation is the lead sponsor of the event.

The BRA Business Development Division have been working with area retailers and restaurateurs to arrange special discounts (Button Benefits) for patrons wearing First Night buttons. While programming of First Night Activities has greatly expanded from years past, the price of a First Night button has decreased from $18 to $10 to make First Night more accessible to all Bostonians.   For a complete list of button sale locations, visit  www.firstnightboston.org.
Scheduled highlights of the program so far include:
  • Fireworks shows;
  • Ice sculptures around the City;
  • The Bank of America Grand Procession (the main parade);
  • Family Festival at the Hynes Convention Center;
  • Video installations on the Boston Public Library;
  • Live musical performances;
  • And a live WGBH “Toast of the Nation” broadcast.
Several BRA staff members have been closely involved with First Night 2014. BRA Director Peter Meade; Director of Business Development Randi Lathrop; and ONEin3 Manager Chloe Ryan are working closely with the Mayor's Office of Arts, Tourism & Special Events to help plan what the City hopes will be its biggest and best First Night so far.

Keep visiting the First Night website and stay tuned to the BRA and City of Boston, as additional events (in particular, something special at Fenway!) will be announced throughout November and December.
