Ever done a “walk-shop?” Neither have we, so let’s try!

Aug 20, 2015

Brookside Community Health Center was teeming with people on a hot day last month when close to 200 residents from Jamaica Plain came out for an open house kick-off of the Plan JP/Rox Washington Street corridor planning study. While BRA planners are wishing for slightly cooler weather, they hope that another great crowd will attend walking and biking tours of the study area on Tuesday evening, September 1.

In an effort to engage the community in new and different ways around planning initiatives, BRA staff first thought of the idea of “walk-shops” (walking workshops) while laying the foundation for the two ongoing strategic planning studies in Jamaica Plain/Roxbury and South Boston. The idea has since expanded to include tours on bikes.

Due to the size of the study area, separate walking tours will explore the southern and northern halves of the Washington Street corridor. The walks will be about 1.5 miles each. Walkers should meet at either the Green Street or Stony Brook MBTA stations, depending on which area one would like to walk.

A single bike tour will explore the entire length of the four-mile corridor, which spans Washington Street in Jamaica Plain and Columbus Avenue in Roxbury. Cyclists should meet at the Green Street T Station.

All of the tours (walking and biking) will start promptly at 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of these tours is to continue the dialogue that started at the open house about priority items that the planning study can address while enjoying a great summer night out and appreciating the assets of the neighborhood. BRA planners and participants in the tours will take note of areas where improvements could be made.

Interested attendees are encouraged to RSVP for their preferred tour.
