Boston by the Numbers is a series created by the Research Division that highlights the characteristics of Boston's population and economy.

New Bostonians 2012 is our latest overview of the foreign-born population in Boston. This report provides a demographic and economic snapshot of Boston's foreign-born population. This recent update contains new data and calculations using the most recent American Community Survey, a yearly survey by the U.S. Census Bureau to allow communities to see how they are changing in the years between decennial censuses.

Mark Melnik, Deputy Director for Research, spoke to a group convened by the Mayor's Office of Jobs and Community Services and the Boston Private Industry Council, as part of a new series called the Boston Workforce Issues Forum. He spoke about the 2010 Census and what's been learned in terms of demographic and socio-economic trends in Boston.

This report features selected data collected on all people and households in the 2010 Census and are from the 2010 Census Summary Files (SF-1). Population information included in these reports are sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household and family characteristics, and group quarters population. Housing items include whether a housing unit is owner-occupied or renter-occupied, as well as occupancy and vacancy status.
